Friday, July 28, 2006 introduction..? I suppose if I do write about football it would mainly consists of Arsenal related commentaries. To widen that horizon a wee bit, it would probably consists of the Premiership (possibly the only league I religiously follow). In some cases boring international friendlies or qualifiers. See the thing about being Malaysian is that you can choose any team involved in the World Cup. Usual suspects would be Brasil, Italy or England given their dominance in those competition or because of familiarity in watching the English league. My current annoyance is the sprout of fangirls who suddenly think that football is the new Dior saddlebag. Bare with me, I know that I don't OWN football and anyone is free to love this game. I also don't mind girls who watch because of the legs/arms/face of the players (plus, who can blame the players for being beautiful, eh? ;) but what pisses me off is those who think that they're the next top football pundit, spewing all these needless and WRONG trivia about the players or the game. No luv, Brasil won't be in the Euro 2008. And NO, England can't buy players to replace David Beckham as a captain. And yes, they are allowed to exchange shirts after the match has concluded. Oh well... Let it be noted that I do not claim to be a better fan than you when it comes to football, all I'm saying is don't pretend you know stuff when you can't distinguish a direct freekick with an indirect freekick (that took ages for my brother to teach me so you should let someone have the honour too). Now that's out of the way. In the previous entry, 52wks said that most fans would be biting their nails to find out who would be signed for their respective team. For me, close season is the worst time as an Arsenal fan. From the first season I decided that Arsenal is the team for me, Real Madrid, Juventus etc have been flirting with our star players. Who can forget L'enfant Terrible in the form of Nicolas Anelka? With the departure of Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry insisting that he would stay, it is not all quiet on the transfer rumours front, especially from the tabloids in Spain. It's Fabregas this, Ashley Cole that. Oh speaking of newly wedded Ashley Cole, I don't mind seeing him go. It'll be a loss, no doubt but Flamini has proved to be a reliable deputy and Clichy has shown the potential. We might struggle like we did last season but it's a part of the learning curve, no? I don't mind to see the back of him because: a) He has not once apologized for meeting Chelsea behind our backs. b) In fact, he blamed Arsenal for the whole furore. c) He married Cheryl Tweedy. I think choice c) alone is sufficient. hahaaha Seriously, so much for the whole idea of having home grown players better than buying Johnny Foreigners. Loyalty does not exist in the game anymore. It's just us, the fan, who over romanticized the whole one club for a player or the players all should be best friends etc. Anyways, I am not hoping for any signings by Monsieur Wenger anytime soon. He'd probably sign some unproven young defender from France (oh the woes of Pascal Cygan). The squad is quite thin, the other day I had a look on the number of first team players and their possible back up (according to both 442 or 451), it's disheartening to see. I don't think the title is a possibility for this season, and we still have to qualify for the group stages in the Champions League. I do hope we get some Israeli team so if we do get to travel there, it means the war is over.. This entry is so bleak. I'll end this with happy thoughts. Ashburton Grove (will never be referred as The Emirates from me... starting now) Fabregas 4 Senderos 6 van Persie 11 Rosicky 7 :D posted by demerara at 3:43 am |
